Every HiveDesign run walks the patent claim through TRIZ. That's a peer-reviewed, systematic way of solving invention problems. Veldhuijzen and Wits (2013) tested it specifically for getting around patents and it worked. Katznelson and Howells found that Edison used this same approach to get around competitors' patents.

It usually takes over 100 hours of engineering and legal time together, and it almost always ends up as a slide deck that's out of date the moment engineering changes anything. Most of it isn't even grounded in TRIZ, even though the research shows TRIZ-driven circumvention works better than anything else.
